The complete 6-page Application for Admission
is found in the back of the book, but to give
you an idea of the scope of the questions, Section 11,
the Essay portion is posted here for your consideration.
Section 11: Essay Question
Choose either A or B and
respond in 300 words or less.
Question A
You're an adult now and the last thing
you want to do is spend another 4 to 12 years sitting in a classroom.
You know damn well that as soon as you get to college you're going
to party instead of study; you'll sleep through class, download
papers off the internet and briefly retain just enough rote information
to pass tests and get that degree. With this in mind, explain
in 300 words or less why you want to pay a small fortune to avoid
learning the same stuff you avoided learning for free in high
school.
Question B
A town has 300 residents who live within
100 yards of an open, unlined oil waste pit. Assume that poison
seeps into the groundwater at the rate of 2 grams per day and
a steady breeze blows toxins into town at 15 miles per hour. The
oil company owns 40 lawyers, 20 congressmen and several southern
governors, whereas the town has only the support of 1 dedicated,
but woefully powerless activist. Use these statistics and the
Louisiana Environmental Arithmetic equation to calculate the oil
company's profits in relation to the level of lead in the residents'
bloodstream.
